YOUR CREW 你的船員The core team on SC EXPLORER is Archie your captain and Emmy-Rose your mate. On some voyages you may also be accompanied by Don McIntyre or Suijuan Zhou for our Chinese speaking Guests. Occasionally we will offer a themed expedition with a VIP host on-board to make your experience that much more interesting and fulfilling.

Emmy-Rose and Archie share a unique relationship that creates the perfect environment for your intimate Tongan Whale Sail experience. In fact, it was swimming with Humpback Whales in Australia that sparked this relationship flame! As Emmy-Rose (photographer) dove overboard from the camera boat (skippered by Archie) for a swim, she was approached by two inquisitive Humpback Whales who then proceeded to spend the next two and a half hours pe ace fully playing with her. This was Archie’s second day in Australia! He stood awestruck on-board filming this exciting experience. The footage was purchased by National Geographic. The rest – as they say – is history.

Growing up as a Maritime Safety Officer’s daughter Emmy-Rose takes extreme pride and seriousness in ensuring the safety and comfort of passengers. A qualified commercial skipper herself, she is the perfect mate to compliment your extremely experienced Master, Archie. Combined with her waterman skills, and equipped with a warm and engaging personality and a huge smile, Emmy-Rose can’t wait to help bring your Tonga Whale Swim dreams to life! The magic of the Humpback Whales, the power of education, and the passion of your SC EXPLORER crew will all combine to infectiously inspire and delight you!

“Our Oceans need us now more than ever – on-board the SC EXPLORER we have the power of education, inspiration and motivation at our fingertips”

ARCHIE…
Tonga is a home far from home for Archie, who was born and raised on the Isle of Arran, Scotland. His ability to manoeuvre his way around a sail boat, reflects that of his ability to safely navigate any vessel around the seas. Having learnt to sail in the wild weather that lashes the western coastline of Scotland, sailing in the Kingdom of Tonga is a breeze! Brimming with charm and kindness, Archie is the skipper who breaks the mould. With your safety and comfort as his number one priority, it is Archie’s passion to ensure everyone on his vessel falls in love with the ocean, the wind, and all mother nature has to offer in the pristine wonderland that is Tonga!

Archie’s strong sailing background is complimented by his knowledge and love for the majestic Humpback Whale. Having spent several years driving photo boats for the commercial Whale Watching industry on the Gold Coast – Archie has a strong understanding of Humpback Whale behaviours during their great migration to their mating and calving waters. Archie has an unrivalled reputation for spotting Whales from many miles out and handling the vessel safely around them remaining respectful of their safety and intuitive of their mood and natural behaviour.

A delightful cook and a keen fisherman, Archie is happy to clean your catch and cook your fresh seafood while you sit back, relax and enjoy a stunning sunset! Weather you envision yourself making passage with feet dangling over the edge feeling the water between your toes, or with hands full of rope feeling the power of the wind – Archie encourages you to be as involved or as relaxed as you desire.

Extended BIO
Raised by his father, an Outdoor Education Instructor and avid enthusiast for adventure, Archie has grown up learning all things nature. Island style lessons encompassing sailing, diving, paragliding and mountaineering were all the norm. On the water he is a qualified Royal Yachting Association (RYA) / Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) Yacht Master, and in the air he is a British Hangliding and Paragliding Association Pilot.

His professional maritime experience is as diverse in nature as nature its self. Starting young, his first paid position was hiring small fishing boats off the beach to tourists visiting the Isle of Arran! Before finishing school he had progressed to spending his weekends diving for scallops and razor clams - all in the name of adventure and toy money. Whilst completing his Engineering qualification in the Civil Water Filtration industry, Archie spent his weekends devoted to his to his first two loves; Paragliding and Sailing. “Light Airs = Flying. Force 6 = Go Sailing!”

His twenties saw Archie working on charter sailing vessels in southeast Asia. Sailing in the tropics, under power of the trade winds, on-board beautiful old timber cutters and modern fast catamarans. Feeding his love of meeting new people and learning about new cultures Archie fell in love with the Chao Ley; Animist sea gypsie people of the Adang archipelago. What they don’t know about living from the sea, is not worth knowing! By nature, Archie finds it greatly rewarding to introduce people unfamiliar with the life of sailing, and to share all that it can bring to your life.
